A man opened fire outside a Reno casino in Nevada on the morning of July 28, killing at least two people and wounding three others before being taken into custody, authorities said.

The shooting was reported at about 7:25 a.m. outside the Grand Sierra Resort, Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance told media outlets at a briefing.

“We responded to the scene, and within four minutes, we had located the suspect and an officer-involved shooting had occurred,” Nance said. “The suspect was taken to the hospital. I don’t have an update as to his status at this time, but I do know that it was an adult male that was involved.”

Nance said officers found several gunshot victims and other injured people at the scene and immediately began providing first aid, with fire crews assisting. She said several people were transported to hospitals, but did not provide exact numbers or their condition during the briefing.

Later, Reno police spokesperson Chris Johnson told The Associated Press that two people had been killed and at least three more hospitalized. Caroline Ackerman, a spokesperson for Renown Regional Medical Center, confirmed its emergency department had received multiple patients with gunshot wounds.

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve told the Reno Gazette Journal that police told her that several of those hospitalized were in critical condition and that the number of fatalities could rise.

“It could have been much, much worse,” Schieve told the outlet. “We don’t know yet quite how it started or who was involved.”

Police urged residents to avoid the area as emergency vehicles, including several ambulances, swarmed the scene.

“Suspect is in custody with no outstanding threat to the community,” the Reno Police Department said in an update on social media.

The Grand Sierra, which bills itself as having the largest casino floor in northern Nevada, is located near Reno-Tahoe International Airport and has nearly 2,000 hotel rooms. The resort was the site of a fatal shooting in January 2024, when two men were charged with killing another guest.

“My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community,” Reno City Council member Devon Reese said in a social media post, describing the incident as “yet another act of senseless gun violence.”
